This annual event is one of the most important Citizen Science efforts to monitor long-term bird populations.

Ridgway's Rail Bird Release & Monitoring Project

SUMMER, 2016 RAIL RELEASE: Three radio-tagged Ridgway's Rails were released from the BVAS Nature Center trail July 6, and BVAS volunteers participated in monitoring these birds for six weeks. See these articles on Updates and conclusion of the survey. 

FALL, 2016 RAIL RELEASE: Two more radio-tagged Ridgway's Rails were released from our trail October 5. Follow the story at the beginning and end of the survey.

California Brown Pelican Survey

MAY 2016 SURVEY: In May, 2016,  a dozen BVAS members and friends participated in a new survey program to help monitor the long-term health of California Brown Pelicans. This is part of a joint effort of USFWS, eBird, state agencies, and the Audubon network to help define the distribution and abundance of Brown Pelicans and track shifts in population structure. Results of the survey so far are available.
