Monthly General Meeting – Citizen Science and the Amphibian and Reptile Atlas of Peninsular California with Brad Hollingsworth

April 17, 2019 @ 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

We humans seem to have a fascination with our fellow animals, especially the adorable, colorful, or majestic. For the citizen scientists among us (our members and readers!), that fascination is also fueled by the complexity, novelty, and intricate interweaving of life and habitat.

Two groups of animals often go ignored or unappreciated. They live in or near our wetlands, ocean, sage scrub, chaparral, and woodlands. Each plays an important role and each is tied to the health of our local ecosystems. And while both can be elusive, amphibians and reptiles (herptiles or herps) can command the spotlight when we are given just the right guide.

Enter Dr. Brad Hollingsworth, Curator of Herpetology at the San Diego Natural History Museum (NAT) and Adjunct Professor of Biology at San Diego State University. Through his presentation, Brad will lead us from around the Nature Center to the reaches of Southern and Baja California in search our most notable natives. We’ll be introduced to the NAT’s Atlas (herpatlas.sdnhm.org) and how each of us can use this incredible, user-friendly tool to better appreciate the biodiversity of our region.

Dr. Hollingsworth will open our eyes to a much larger world. Who knows? You may find herps to be your new, favorite fascination.
