North America’s Galápagos: The Historic Channel Islands Biological Survey

June 19 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Corinne Heyning Laverty, Wednesday, June 19
Social: 6:45 p.m., Program: 7:00 p.m.

In the years leading up to World War II, a remarkable series of scientific
expeditions unfolded across California’s eight Channel Islands. These
ventures were aimed at unraveling the islands’ history and delving into
their rich diversity of flora and fauna. Led by a group of explorers and
enthusiastic young scientists, sponsored by the Natural History Museum of
Los Angeles County, the expeditions were driven by a shared mission to
uncover the human history and biological evolution of these enigmatic
islands. Despite encountering both successes and setbacks, the endeavors
provided invaluable insights into the ecological significance of the Channel
Islands. Their findings laid the groundwork for the islands’
eventual designation as a national park, a crucial step in
preserving their natural beauty, unique ecosystems, and
archaeological treasures for generations to come.
